5 Easy Ways You Can Help Prevent Hair Loss

By The Edge

If you find yourself experiencing hair loss, you certainly aren’t alone. In fact, according to the American Hair Loss Association, as many as two-thirds of American men will experience some degree of hair loss as early as age 35, and by age 50, about 85% of men will have significantly thinning hair.

Several factors can contribute to eventual hair loss, including genetics, age, smoking, increased consumption of caffeine, stress, hormonal imbalance, and a history of skin issues. While there may be no magic elixir that can help you regrow what hair you’ve lost, there are a few things you can do to preserve what you still have.

In observance of National Hair Loss Awareness month, Richard Moore, M.D. and his team of specialists have compiled a list of tips to help you hold onto your hair:

Seek Help ASAP – A strong defense is the best offense when it comes to preserving your locks. Keep an eye on what your hair looks like, and if you begin noticing any signs of thinning or balding, talk to your doctor right away.

Be Aware of Your Personal Risk Factors – Oftentimes, hair loss is hereditary, so if your family history reflects this, it’s important to tell your doctor. Additionally, if you have a tendency to overuse styling tools, lead an unhealthy lifestyle, smoke, or take certain medications, then you may have a higher risk of losing your hair.

Switch Your Shampoo – There are countless shampoos on the market that claim to make your hair appear thicker, but only one ingredient can actually help preserve your locks: ketoconazole. In one Belgian study, a group of balding men saw a 17% reduction in their hair loss when they used 1% ketoconazole shampoo two to three times a week for six months.

Just make sure to use this type of shampoo no more than three times a year as it can dry out your hair. Lather up with non-irritating shampoo in the meantime.

Eat a Healthy Diet – A nutritious diet isn’t just good for your body – it can also benefit your mane! Limit your intake of processed sugar and fried foods and say yes to more fruits, vegetables, and healthy sources of protein to help preserve your hair (and keep your body even healthier in the process).
